Jo O’Neill-McBurney (21), from Crumlin, Co Antrim, was suspended from St Marys Christian Brothers Boys Grammar School in west Belfast after a 30-minute sex video, featuring her and a teenager, believed to be a 16-year-old, emerged on the internet.
Its recognized the footage, thought to have been documented by the pair in April, has in recent weeks been viewed over 6,000 moments on a free website.
It isn’t identified who uploaded the graphic footage to the site.
The age of consent for sexual activity in Northern Ireland is 16, however it’s illegal for anyone in a place of trust to participate in sexual activity with an individual under 18 years of age.
The offence can carry up to five years in prison.
Ms ONeill-McBurney is increasingly being examined by police for an abuse of trust.
A PSNI spokesman said: Police can verify they received a report of an event in April 2013.
This is subject to a continuing police investigation and therefore it’d be improper to comment more at this stage.
PSNI kid safety officers got involved in the case after another pupil at St Mary’s notified a member of staff to the specific video.
Ms O’Neill-McBurney was immediately suspended and has since left her job.
The teenager in the movie left St Marys in the summer after finishing his exams.
A statement from St Marys said: (The school) became aware of an allegation that involved one of its former pupils (and) immediately applied related safeguarding steps in collaboration with all appropriate agencies.
A staff member was immediately put on a precautionary suspension and is no longer employed.
A friend of Ms O’Neill-McBurney told the Sunday Life she’s been left distraught by the episode.
Jo has been devastated by this, the supply said.
She has made repeated attempts to have the video removed from the web site but has had no success.
She is extremely discouraged, hurt and frightened.
